The Viewsat 9000 HD FTA Receiver

Once again one of the leading FTA manufacturers stuns the FTA community by releasing yet again another fine free to air receiver unit. With all of the hype and interest in HD High Definition Viewsat has seen the demand from loyal FTA users and has delivered yet again another fine product.

Similar in size to other Viewsat units such as the Ultra and Extreme the 9000 HD is a somewhat larger unit with stunning good looks. Noted for its ease of operation we were anxious to see how this unit performed. In a nutshell we found that the 9000 HD is super simple to operate. The biggest thing we noticed was the striking similarity in all operating functions allowing users to upgrade from older units to this one seamlessly and without major headaches.

Some of the more prominent features on the 9000 HD are 2 USB ports on the front and back of the unit. One port is allocated for upgrade purposes and the other for hard drive features. With a much larger case and a lighting fast CPU we were extremely impressed with its all around performance. Another noteable feature on the 9000HD is the ability to run dual tuners. With this unit you can run one tuner for satellite signals and the secong one for off air ATSC signals. This feature is a big plus for those living north of the border and wish to gain access to Canadian HD signals.

Wile we were impressed by the overall picture quality we were dissapointed in the units inability to tell us what our resolution or input type was. Standard SD quality is average and we hope viewsat addresses this issue in the next version of this receiver.

Viewsat 9000 HD

Viewsat 9000 HD Features and Highlights at a Glance:

  • Mpeg2 and Mpeg4 support.
  • HDTV, SDTV display support.
  • Teletext close caption.
  • Video : HDMI, S-Video, Ypbpr, Composite
  • Audio : AC3, SPDIF (Optical) (Includes Bypass).
  • Aspect ratio adjustment 4:3 (16/9 crop), 4:3 (16/9 letterbox), 16:9 (4/3 pillar box).

  • Favorite channel selections.

  • Parental Guide and rating control.
  • Picture in Picture support.(Aux input/optional)
  • Electronic Program Guide EPG. DiSEqC 1.0 & or DiSEqC 1.2
  • 2 USB 2.0 ports.

Audio quality is average for the basic user but we found that AC3 signals were sub par and no tweaking could be made on the signal. For most users this will be ok but audiophiles will definately be dissapointed by this big oversight on the manufacturers part.

For the most part we were pretty happy with the overall performance and features of this unit. Big improvements such as simply picture upconverting, AC3 audio passing (although we had trouble), improved C-Band channel listings, improved 480i standard picture quality and simple remote were huge factors that we liked.

Entering the market at roughly $500.00 CDN the Viewsat 9000 HD should be considered by existing Viewsat owners and even those just entering the HD FTA arena. With other similar units in the same price range many of the features and options are near identical in this price range. Definately a unit to check out.

Receiver Compatible? My main TV (plasma) went down yesterday and I've had to put it in the shop. My question is this: Can I move a SD TV to my living room and connect to my HR21-700? I realize I would have no HDMI connection on the SDTV, but wouldn't it work with A/V or some other cable?

Quick Question - Owned HR-20?A few months back I got an offer for a 'free' install of an HD-DVR (HR-20-100 refurb'd) to replace the HR10 that I *owned*. It was installed and gave me enough problems over the next few weeks until I'd had it and called for a replacement. A tech brought me a new HR21-100, installed it and all has...

HELP!!! PleaseI did something STUPID and now my remote doesn't work.. I can control the volume and that is it. No channels, no number keys...nada. I have an HR20-700.

Two transponders drop to 0 between 4pm and 6pmI've got a strange problem where the 2 transponders with my SD locals (Sat 119, tp 24/25) drop from 95-100 to 0 between 4pm and 6pm almost every day. I know it can't be the HD-DVR, since it happens on all 3 of my HR20's (both tuners). I have a Slimline dish and a Zinwell WB68 using 6 outputs. I...

Recorded Show Not Showing up in My PlaylistHi New HR-21 User here (longtime DirecTivo user). I set the US Olympic Swimming Trials to record from 8-9 last night (added to ToDo list the day before). At about 8:05 I went to start watching it. It was showing when I turned on the TV. The show never showed up in My Playlist. I watched about...

R15 300 0x121EReceived a new 121E upgrade today. Any new features to report? I just received an update on June 18th, now today. Can't notice anything new...anyone? Only problem, all shows scheduled to record were deleted, as were the search lists. I had to go through the setup menus..

Dish HD picture QualityI have noticed in the last few months that my HD pictures are not as sharp and clear as they were. They are still 100% better than Dish SD. *I would compare most of my Dish HD Channels to the same Quality as my Toshiba HD player when I am upconverting a Standard DVD to 1080i.* *My Locals that are...

Other half of country get HD Locals? So I know there is a lack of a Satelite to cover HD locals for the western part of the country but does anyone know if there is a plan to get a Sat for us? Some huge DMA's being missed. I am in Las Vegas and probably will never get HD locals.

Ordering SWMIs it possible yet to call Directv and order an SWM kit?

DISH, AT&T To End Partnership At Year-EndWow.... http://www.informationweek.com/news/services/data/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=208802035

How Do You Make Sub Folders On VIP622 DVRI am looking to create subfolders on my DVR to store moive. Can anyone advise if this is possible and walk me through the process?

HR21 issue fatigueAfter months of owning the HR21, I have grown tired of the ongoing software issues. I am just over having to struggle with the flakey response to remote commands and the recurring 771/blank recording issue. I've been a DIRECTV customer since 1995 and this is the worst user experience I have had...

How do I record all episodes?I want to record all episodes of a show on all channels. How do I do this? It seems that the Guide will only record a single channel with a series link. I've tried searching by keyword and title. I've tried creating a series link and using autorecord. Whatever way I try, showings which aren't...

Replace H20-600 with H21I am having an issue with my H20-600 and I know beyond a doubt it is the receiver, I've swapped it to another location in the house with another H20-600 and the problem followed, I've also tried swapping the BBC's and the problem remained. Every so often it will give a 711, If I run a test it will...
