The Newest Free To Air FTA Receivers

The Pantec MX Ultra FTA Receiver

Modelled after the wildly popular Pansat 2500 receiver, the Pantec MX Ultra is one of those receivers for the budget conscience. Manufactured by Multistar, the Pantec has all of the great features and is distinctly similar to the Pansat and is considered by many to be a clone. An overall good unit compared to those in the same price range, the Pantec may be less advanced for seasoned FTA users and shows its age but nontheless a solid performer for those looking for an entry level digital satellite television solution.

Coupled with a DiSEgC 1.3 switch this unit can scan over 60 different satellites and store a somewhat impressive 2500 channels. Standard connections such as RCA, S-Video and Digital Audio complete this unit quite nicely and provides acceptable picture quality.

Its small size also appeals to many being one of the smallest units one the market today. The included remote control is quite large and functions well with the most used functions in comfortable positions.

Being a clone of another popular fta receiver does have its downfalls though. The Pantec units are prone to users having to update the firmware more often than non clone receivers. While this may be fine for some we don't recommend it for the novice user as the frustration level can set in at an alarming rate. The upside is you get the same funtions as the Pansat 2500 such as a 7 day program guide, Multi language display option, great On Screen Display, RS-232 upgrade port, 4 satellite simultaneous scan and good quality audio and picture.

Pantec MX Ultra Features at a Glance:

  • DVB/MPEG-2 Compliant
  • Multi-Functions EPG (Electronic Program Guide)
  • Multi-Language Support
  • Automatic PAL/NTSC Conversion
  • Excellent Channel Search Ability
  • Responsive Channel Changing

    FTA/Scramble and full Parental Controls

  • Manual PID Scan/Satellite & Satellite Scan - Simultaneous Scan with 4 Satellites
  • DiSEgC 1.3 Control Compatible (STAB USALS)
  • UHF Ready for 2nd Room is Optional
  • IR Extension Ready is Optional

If you can manage upgrading bins and firmware regularly then this unit should be fine for you and you will save some bucks in the process. If you are looking for a much more stable and solid performer then other options are available such as Pansat, Viewsat, Coolsat and many others.

HoustonPBS 8.1 Letterbox sometimes/sometimes notAnyone have any contacts at KUHT in Houston? On the OTA HD channel (not one of the SD subchannels) they seem to broadcast some programs in 16:9 and some letterbox 4:3 (basically pillarbox + letterbox). Not really a problem because my 622 can zoom it, but it makes me wonder why? Laziness?
